This is a Korean TV news report (Channel A, 1:52). Its title means “While the President watched… two drones crash.” It shows the Armed Forces Day laser-weapon demo: one target drone falls on takeoff before the laser fires, and in the second round a drone that wasn’t hit drops after its power is cut.

What’s said in the clip, in English
  1. 0:00 Anchor: At the Armed Forces Day ceremony, the military set out to show off its advanced weapons, with the President and the Defense Minister watching. Along the way, two target drones crashed, an embarrassing moment. Our reporter has the story.
  2. 0:16 Reporter: At today’s ceremony the military unveiled, for the first time, its laser anti-air weapon, Cheongwang.
  3. 0:21 Announcers at the ceremony: “Cheongwang was developed under the lead of the Agency for Defense Development, and its stable operation has been verified. Today’s demonstration will shoot down small drones, two at a time, in two rounds.”
  4. 0:34 Reporter: Two small drones acting as targets take off.
  5. 0:38 But before Cheongwang even fires its laser, one drone suddenly loses its balance and falls to the ground.
  6. 0:44 Then the second demonstration. As planned, one drone is brought down by Cheongwang. (Live commentary: “The drone is going down in flames.”)
  7. 0:54 But the other drone flying beside it, which was not hit, suddenly drops.
  8. 0:59 After a combat test involving the ROKS Marado two months ago and a defense ministry demonstration last month, it is yet another drone crash. President Lee and Defense Minister Kang Shin-cheol, attending the Armed Forces Day event, watched the crashes.
  9. 1:12 The Defense Ministry said the first drone fell because its [fiber-optic] cable was damaged, and that in the second demonstration a drone drifted out of the safe area because of the weather and was brought down on purpose.
  10. 1:22 The ceremony also showed off new military equipment, including the KF-21 Korean fighter jet, the Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile built to strike North Korean underground bunkers, and AI-based drones.
  11. 1:34 Reporting for Channel A News.

Machine-assisted translation of YouTube’s automatic Korean captions, not an official subtitle track or a word-for-word transcript. The automatic captions have errors; where they were garbled we checked against The Korea Times. Channel A’s video has no English captions, and YouTube doesn’t let an embedded player turn on its English auto-translation, so we show the English here.

Crash of the Month · November 2026

Crash on Live TV, in Front of the President

Oct 1, 2026, Armed Forces Day at Gyeryongdae, South Korea. During a live national TV demo of the Cheongwang laser weapon, a target drone lost its balance and crashed on takeoff while the President watched. The military said strong gusts damaged the thin fiber-optic cable that controls it. Later, a second drone drifted out of the safe area, so officials cut its power on purpose. No one was reported hurt.

The lesson: check the wind before an important flight, and plan a safe way down.
